How to check and track brand mentions in ChatGPT
OpenAI offers site owners no Search Console for ChatGPT, and the reporting it gives businesses in Ads Manager covers paid ads only. You can still measure organic mentions honestly: ask a fixed set of buyer questions in a clean session, keep every answer and source, and repeat the same questions through the API so the results stay comparable week to week.
The short answer
- To see mentions today: ask the questions your buyers ask in a logged-out browser window, with ChatGPT's Search tool selected, and open Sources under each answer.
- To track them over time: run the same questions every week through OpenAI's API with web search turned on, set the country you care about, and store every answer, citation and consulted URL.
- Keep four things apart: a mention in the answer text, a citation that links to your page, a product card in shopping results, and a sponsored ad. Only the first two describe organic answer visibility.
What changes the answer you see
ChatGPT does not give everyone the same answer. OpenAI's help pages describe several inputs that shape it:
- Search queries. When ChatGPT searches, it usually rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries and may send more specific follow-up queries after reading the first results. OpenAI says it sometimes uses other search providers for this; its search help page links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies.
- Location. ChatGPT estimates a general location from your IP address, so a VPN or an office network can change local results. Sharing precise device location is optional and off by default.
- Memory. If memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query.
- Shopping intent. For product questions, ChatGPT can show product cards. OpenAI says these are selected independently, are not ads, and draw on structured product data from merchants and third parties plus the user's context, such as memory and custom instructions.
- Ads. ChatGPT shows ads to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, starting with a US test in February 2026 and expanding to more countries since. OpenAI says ads are labelled as sponsored, kept visually separate, and do not influence ChatGPT's answers.
A single check from your own logged-in account therefore tells you about one person, in one place, on one day.
Step 1: Check by hand in a clean session
- Open chatgpt.com in a private browser window without signing in. Web search works for people who are not signed in, and there is no memory or chat history to steer the answer.
- Select Search from the tools menu, or type
/and choose Search, so every check uses web search. Without it, ChatGPT decides for itself whether to search. - Ask each question from your prompt set exactly as written: discovery questions that do not name you, comparisons with a named competitor, and fact checks about your prices or features.
- Open Sources under the answer. It lists the cited sources and other relevant links.
- Record the result before asking the next question.
For each check, keep a row like this:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Date, prompt and prompt version | 2026-10-21, "best payroll software for a small agency", v3 |
| Session | Logged out, Search selected, approximate location Chicago |
| Mentioned, and where | Yes, third of five tools |
| Your pages cited | /pricing |
| Competitors mentioned | Brand A first, Brand B second |
| Product cards or ads | None |
If you check local or regional questions, write down the location ChatGPT appears to use. A VPN changes it, and so does including a city in the question.
Step 2: Track it with the API
Manual checks are good for spotting problems. A trend needs the same instrument every week. OpenAI's Responses API has a web_search tool that returns:
- Citations as
url_citationannotations on the answer text, with the URL and title of each cited source. - Every consulted source, when you add
web_search_call.action.sourcesto theincludeparameter. OpenAI notes that this list is often longer than the list of citations. - Location control through
user_location, an approximate location with a two-letter country code and optional city, region and time zone.
The consulted-sources list is the most useful field for a site owner, because it separates two different problems: your page was never retrieved, or it was retrieved and another source was preferred.
Keep the model, settings and prompt wording fixed, and start a new series whenever you change one of them. API answers will not match the app exactly, because the app adds memory, personal settings and its own model choices. Treat the API as a consistent instrument, not as a copy of what each user sees. If you show API answers to other people, OpenAI requires inline citations to be visible and clickable.
Step 3: Read mentions, citations and sources together
| What you see | What it usually means | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Mentioned and cited | ChatGPT found your page useful for this question | Keep the page accurate and current |
| Mentioned, not cited | ChatGPT knows the brand from other pages | Which sources it cited, and whether your own page answers the question |
| Consulted, not cited | Your page was retrieved, but another source was used | Whether your page states the answer clearly and early |
| Not consulted at all | ChatGPT search did not retrieve your page | Crawler access first, then whether any page targets this question |
| Only in an ad | Paid placement | Report it separately from organic visibility |
Report rates with their counts, for example "mentioned in 9 of 30 answers over three weeks". A difference of one or two answers is noise until it persists.
When ChatGPT never consults your site
Fix access before rewriting content. OpenAI's help page says a website becomes eligible for ChatGPT search results when it allows OAI-SearchBot to crawl and when its host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published search-bot IP addresses. It also says placement is not guaranteed.
- Confirm robots.txt allows
OAI-SearchBot. BlockingGPTBotdoes not affect search; the GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot guide explains the difference. - Check CDN and firewall logs for 403 or 429 responses to OpenAI's agents. The ChatGPT-User vs OAI-SearchBot guide shows how to find them.
- Run the free AI visibility checker on the page you expect to be cited, to catch noindex, canonical and rendering problems.
- If you sell products, keep structured product data accurate. OpenAI says Shopify stores reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and other merchants can apply for a direct product feed.
Measure the visits ChatGPT sends
In GA4, look for sessions whose source is chatgpt.com. Treat the number as a minimum, because visits from apps can arrive without a referrer and be counted as direct traffic. In your server logs, requests from ChatGPT-User show pages that ChatGPT fetched because a person asked about them, which is a useful signal even when no click follows.
CiteVisor's paid plans run this method weekly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity and keep each answer, citation and week-over-week change. The overview of tracking brand mentions in AI search covers the method shared by all four engines, with separate guides for Perplexity and Gemini.

Frequently asked questions
How can I see brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Ask the questions your buyers ask in a logged-out browser window with Search selected, then open Sources under each answer to see which pages were cited. Repeat the same questions on a schedule, because one answer is only a sample.
ChatGPT brand mention checker—is there an official one?
Not from OpenAI: its Ads Manager reports only on paid ads. Checking by hand in the app costs nothing. Automating the checks through OpenAI's API costs money per call, which is what paid trackers, including CiteVisor's plans, do on a schedule.
Can I pay to be mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
Not according to OpenAI. Ads in ChatGPT are labelled as sponsored and shown separately, and OpenAI says they do not influence answers. Product results in shopping answers are not ads either.
Why is my brand missing from ChatGPT responses?
Start with access. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked in robots.txt or at your CDN, ChatGPT search cannot retrieve your pages. If access is fine, compare the sources ChatGPT cites with your own page for the same question.
Can I track competitor mentions in ChatGPT?
Yes. Use the same prompt set and record every brand named in each answer, with its position. Comparing your mention count with each competitor's across the same answers gives your AI share of voice.
Does Ads Manager show organic ChatGPT mentions?
No. Ads Manager reporting concerns paid advertising, not a count of organic recommendations or citations. Keep sponsored placements separate and sample organic answers with a fixed prompt set.
